School to Work Planning
Do you have skills that are going to help you get a
job when you leave school? (or even a part time job while you are
still at school? I'll bet you do - but how do you know what they
are, and more importantly, how do you let an employer know what
skills you have?
That's where School to
Work Planning comes in. We are going to work with you to find out
all the skill you have and to gather evidence and record that
evidence so that you can demonstrate to an employer exactly what
you are capable of. A central feature of the program is the School
to Work Planning Logbook (see the picture on the right) in which
you will record all this information. You will receive this
logbook in Year 9 or 10 and it becomes yours to keep until you
leave school.
There are a huge number of ways and places you
can develop skills that will help you with work and employment,
but they can be summarised into 3 main areas:
The
Classroom - many of the activities that you
do in class will highlight skills that you have and how they are
related to employment
The
School and Community - you will be involved
in many activities within the school (but outside the classroom)
and out in the community that highlight these skills. It might be
the debating team, or fundraising or sporting teams. All these
things show off the skills that you have
Workplace
Learning - this could be Work
Experience, Work Placement, a part time job that you have or even
volunteer work. When you are involved in the workplace in some
way, it is a great place to be able to both learn new skill and
record them to show a future employer.
Through the School to Work Planning process, we
will show you how (and help you), to record these skills. It is a
really valuable tool, so come and talk to your campus Careers
Advisor if you have
any questions.
